ABSTRACT

Dr. Jason Bocarro discusses how participating in sport can impact people’s physical and mental health. However, like many things in life, how these opportunities are planned, structured and designed are critically important to maximize those health benefits as well as other social, community and economic benefits. We will discuss some of the sport initiatives our faculty and students have been a part of both locally and across the globe and discuss how sport often plays a critical role in addressing fundamental health challenges.

Jason Bocarrom, Ph.D., is the Owens-Shelton Distinguished Professor of Leadership with a Global Perspective and the James Buzzard Leadership Program Director in the College of Natural Resources. He is also a university faculty scholar, an alumni distinguished undergraduate professor and was the 2023 recipient of the Board of Governors award for excellence in teaching.  Dr. Bocarro’s research focuses on the intersection of health and inactivity and specifically examining the relationship between the built environment and public spaces and human health. Globally, Dr. Bocarro has also spent the last 15 years leading multinational research teams examining how sport can be leveraged to impact communities. He is the co-author of the book Legacies of Mega Events: Fact or Fairy Tales.
