Abstract

How is NC State working to reduce food waste entering the landfill? In this video, Adam Bensley, the waste diversion coordinator in NC State’s Waste Reduction and Recycling Office discusses efforts to reduce waste at the source, put unused food to use feeding people, and compost what is left. NC State is a leader in organic waste management, and Bensley gives a glimpse of the composting facility here on campus.

As NC State’s waste diversion coordinator, Bensley manages the compost facility and research cooperative and targets opportunities to move NC State toward zero waste. His areas of expertise include reuse and recycling of non-traditional materials, construction and demolition diversion and organics diversion. Bensley earned a bachelor’s degree in horticulture from NC State, and a master’s degree in natural resources and environmental management from the University of Hawai‘i.
