abstract

In this video, Andy Fox and David Hill provide an overview of the Coastal Dynamics Design Lab in NC State University’s College of Design. The lab, co-directed by the presenters, organizes and leads trans-disciplinary research and design teams to address critical ecological and community development challenges in vulnerable coastal regions and shoreline communities, with a concentrated focus on Eastern North Carolina and the Mid-Atlantic coastal plain.

Andy Fox, FASLA, PLA, is a professor, University Faculty Scholar and community engaged faculty fellow with NC State’s Department of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning. His scholarship is focused on the development and management of high-performing public landscapes, integration of conservation and hazard mitigation best practices, and implementation of resilient design strategies in riverine and coastal communities. As a licensed landscape architect, the goal of his work is actionable change in the context of the public realm.

David Hill, FAIA, is a professor and head of the School of Architecture at NC State and a University Faculty Scholar. Hill’s teaching and research focus on design for coastal regions, integrative digital simulation processes, and architectural prototype design and production in contemporary practice. His work has been recognized with awards by the American Institute of Architects (AIA), Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA), and American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA). Hill earned undergraduate degrees in architecture from NC State and a Master’s of Architecture from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. He is a fellow in the American Institute of Architects.
