Dr. Mary Haskett discusses the food insecurity some NC State students face, and ways to both offer and get help.
College student food insecurity occurs at high rates on college campuses, including NC State. In this video, Mary E Haskett, Ph.D., discusses the underlying causes of food insecurity in college student populations and the negative impact of food insecurity on their wellbeing, sense of belonging, their personal relationships and their academic progress toward earning a degree. Haskett offers some ideas for how NC State students can help address this wicked problem.
Mary E. Haskett, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Psychology at NC State and she directs the Family Studies Research Team. She and her students conduct research to identify resilient functioning of children who have faced adverse childhood experiences such as homelessness and to test the effects of parenting interventions. Dr. Haskett is co-leading NC Yay Babies, an initiative that helps increase services for young children who experience homelessness. On campus, Dr. Haskett is co-chair of the NC State Student Food and Housing Security Initiative. She collected data on food and housing security among NC State students before and during the pandemic; that research — and the commitment of many students, staff, and faculty across campus — has contributed to new campus efforts to address student food insecurity and homelessness.
